DefenseCon was Star Citizen’s spring ship expo in 2026, running from May 14 to 27 at the Bevic Convention Center. It took the slot Invictus Launch Week has held for years, came with a Free Fly period, and was the event during which Star Citizen’s crowdfunding crossed $1 billion.
For a new or returning player the recap matters for two reasons: several of the ships shown there are now flyable in the live game, and the biggest reveal, the Anvil Odin battlecruiser, says a lot about where CIG is taking ship sales. Here is what happened, drawn from the in-game event, the two Star Citizen Live showcase episodes, and the Alpha 4.8 release notes.
Why DefenseCon instead of Invictus
In the game’s fiction, DefenseCon is Drake Interplanetary’s own show, launched in 2950 after Drake was repeatedly left out of the Navy’s Invictus Launch Week. In 2956, the in-game year for 2026, the UEE held Invictus only in the Sol system, so Drake’s CEO staged DefenseCon on its own and far larger than before, with many manufacturers that normally exhibit at Invictus taking part.
Out of fiction, CIG also cancelled CitizenCon for 2026 to concentrate on development and on this one showcase. That made DefenseCon the year’s main event for reveals, and it is why so much landed in a two-week window.
The ships that became flyable
CIG revealed almost the entire lineup early through a social media campaign and the weekly newsletter, then used the Star Citizen Live showcase to walk through each ship in the editor. All of them arrived in Alpha 4.8, the patch that followed the event.
- Drake Ironclad and Ironclad Assault: a heavy freighter carrying around 2,204 SCU, flown from a detachable Drake Command Module that doubles as a lifeboat and is a standalone craft in its own right
- Drake Command Module: the shared cockpit unit used by the Ironclad and Caterpillar; a bug that let damage to it disable the whole ship was acknowledged on stream with a fix in progress
- Drake Pitbull, Origin M80 and MISC Starlite: the smaller reveals, with the Starlite a dedicated refueling ship that gained purpose when 4.8 overhauled refueling
- Aegis Tiburon: the new Aegis combat ship shown alongside the Hammerhead’s gold-standard update
The Anvil Odin battlecruiser
The headline reveal was a concept ship: the Anvil Odin, over 750 meters long, introduced in game as a giant hologram above Area18 and then in a dedicated showcase episode. A battlecruiser, in the team’s words, has a battleship’s weaponry in a cruiser’s frame, and the loadout they read out was enormous: two triple size 12 ballistic turrets, three single size 10 manned turrets, eight size 10 remote turrets, eight double size 8 manned turrets, two quad size 8 laser cannons for the pilot, a forward beam weapon made of twelve barrels, roughly 43 point-defense and flak emplacements grouped into visible clusters, 20 size 12 torpedo tubes with 40 torpedoes ready, and 6,000 SCU of cargo.
Two design points matter more than the numbers. The weapons retract, so the ship has a quiet state and a combat state. And the defenses were deliberately made readable from outside because attacking one is meant to be a layered fight: strip the point defense and shield emitters before anyone can think about boarding or disabling it. The developers said it would be its own Tactical Strike Group scenario and that it still has to be killable.
It went on sale as a limited concept pledge at $5,000, with buyers applying to an Odin Founders Club and receiving a loaner ship until the Odin is flyable. The team repeatedly called it the last great concept ship and described the reveal as close to the end of an era for concept vehicles.
The day funding passed $1 billion
The first wave of Odin pledges raised about $6.6 million within minutes and pushed the crowdfunding total past $1 billion on May 24, shortly before 5 PM UTC, in the middle of the expo. Star Citizen was already the most crowdfunded video game on record; the Odin sale is what made the milestone land during DefenseCon rather than later in the year.
The Free Fly
DefenseCon carried the year’s spring Free Fly, letting anyone play without a game package for the duration. That window has closed. The next regular opportunity is the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo in late November, which has brought a Free Fly in past years and has not yet been dated by CIG.
What this means for new players
Nothing from DefenseCon requires spending anything. The five ships that became flyable can be rented or bought in game with aUEC, the Odin is years from flyable and priced for organizations, and the best thing the event did for newcomers was put more people in the live game than ever. If you missed the Free Fly, create your account ahead of the November expo so the download and the signup bonus are already sorted. Our Star Citizen referral code guide explains how the 50,000 UEC signup bonus works and how to apply code STAR-6WPK-3K56 before you enlist.
