Star Citizen Alpha 4.9, subtitled Frontier Tensions, arrived in July 2026 as a smaller patch than planned. Its flagship content, the rebuilt Siege of Orison and the instancing technology underneath it, was pulled into a brand-new Alpha 4.10 so the servers had more time to harden. Rather than delay everything a month, CIG shipped the rest of 4.9 on schedule.
What remained is the kind of patch that changes how the game feels day to day without a headline: ship combat finally tells you what your shots are doing, a new mission giver’s contracts opened up, ballistic weapons were rebalanced, and a long list of long-standing bugs closed. If you started in 4.10, a lot of what you take for granted arrived here.
Why Siege of Orison left 4.9
CIG announced the move on its Star Citizen Live Tech Talk and in the Alpha 4.9 Patch Report episode: Siege of Orison would shift to mid-August to give the team more time to harden the systems behind the first iteration of content instancing. The team said the decision came in equal parts from its own desire to make the new content succeed and from community feedback. Everything else slated for 4.9 was judged ready, so it shipped, and Siege became Alpha 4.10.
Recco Battaglia’s contracts
Ahead of her return as an in-person mission giver in 4.10, Recco Battaglia, an independent mining logistics coordinator based in Levski, gained a set of repeatable contracts accepted through the mobiGlas. They cover prospecting, mining, recovery, salvage, investigations and ship reclamation, wrapped in a story about attacks on industrial ships across the frontier by a group called the Moraine.
Building reputation with her pays in hardware more than credits: exclusive blueprints for People’s Alliance armor and Klescher laser repeater components, and at higher tiers unique variants of the Drake Golem, MISC Prospector and Argo MOLE delivered to your home location.
Ship combat hit markers
Before 4.9, ship combat gave almost no feedback on what a hit did. Now the reticle and a distinct audio cue change with the result of every shot, so you can tell by ear whether you are bouncing off armor or breaking components.
- Deflected: the shot reached the target but armor absorbed it entirely
- Shield hit, armor hit and hull hit, in the order you work through a target
- Component hit and component destroyed, for power plants, coolers and weapons
Weapon and mission rebalance
Ballistic repeaters had their damage cut sharply. The BEHR size 4 ballistic cannon went the other way, from 325 to 1,090 damage per shot with a slower fire rate and shorter armor penetration distance, while the size 5 BEHR gatling, both Esperia Deadbolt cannons and the size 5 Vanduul plasma cannon lost some damage. Ship mining laser power went up about 20 percent.
With armor now on every ship, combat missions were rebalanced across the roster: industrial ships no longer spawn in combat missions unless a mission calls for them, and Defend Ship missions send a lower class of attacker so the ship you are protecting can actually be saved. Bombing Run and Destroy Satellite missions became regional instead of system-wide.
New gear: the Behring CQ7 and the Bellator suit
The Behring CQ7 bullpup rifle answered a year of feedback asking for a standard, lower fire-rate rifle. It does 16.5 damage per shot at 650 rounds per minute from a 40-round magazine, with a consistent vertical recoil pattern that rewards learning it. It drops in Ship In Distress missions and the two Moraine missions, and sells in shops across several locations.
The Bellator Combat Suit is a tailored civilian outfit, jacket, trousers, shirt and shoes, that offers a little damage mitigation and weapon attachment slots, including concealed carry for a sidearm and knife under the jacket. It is the first of the combat clothing CIG previewed ahead of the Starwear feature, which the patch report said was tracking for Alpha 4.11 in September.
Everything else worth knowing
The smaller changes add up to a noticeably less annoying game.
- Missiles and torpedoes on cargo grids now show a bounding frame, so stacking ordnance in a hold is predictable
- Freight elevator kiosks explain why a claim is unavailable and what happened when a transfer only partly fits
- Tractor beams work inside the armistice zones at distribution centers, and every distribution center was re-dropped on its planet with physics fixes that repaired a large number of missions
- Abandoned ships around landing zones and stations are cleaned up after five hours
- Flyby audio was rebuilt on a procedural system so passing ships reliably make sound again
- Fixes for the 64008 spawn resolver error, the 64006 disconnect and the 60029 stowing error, plus eight client and two server crash fixes
What this means for new players
If you are starting in 4.10, 4.9 is the reason ship combat is readable and why Battaglia has a reputation ladder waiting for you in Levski. Run her early contracts before her story missions: the blueprints they pay out feed straight into the fabricator, and a Golem or Prospector variant is a real reward for a new account. Frequently Asked Questions
In July 2026. CIG’s Alpha 4.9 Patch Report said the patch would ship the following week after Siege of Orison was moved out of it, and the launcher version was 4.9.0-LIVE.12232306.
CIG moved it, along with the instancing technology it depends on, into a new Alpha 4.10 to harden the servers. The team cited both its own quality bar and community feedback from testing.
Feedback added in 4.9 that changes your reticle and plays a distinct sound for each result of a shot: deflected, shield, armor, hull, component hit and component destroyed.
It drops in Ship In Distress missions and the Moraine Data Retrieval and Moraine Movements missions, and 4.9 added it and its ammunition to shops in several locations.
Ship mining laser power rose about 20 percent, experimental scanning updates made materials easier to find, and Recco Battaglia’s contracts added prospecting and mining missions with blueprint rewards.
